In the Light of Snow

There was a profound silence today and the amazing part was that I was able to hear it.

Celebrating the season

These cards and tea cozy with coaster sets will be available in my shop on the 30th of November. I made them with Hanukkah in mind - the other holiday colors are on their way.

I think that giving handmade cards and gifts like these is what celebrating the holiday season is all about. Tea parties and friendship and making or buying things that were created by hand.
I know most of you already share these handmade ideals but if you haven't already, please take some time this year to step away from the mall and the big lot stores and all that shopping mess.

Buy something handmade from a local crafter or online at shops like Etsy.com - I'm sure you'll find something for everyone on your list.

Happy Holidays!

Karina's Krumble

This year one of the things that I have to give thanks for is Karina. For those of you who don' t know Karina is the Gluten Free Goddess, whose recipes and wisdom I worship on a daily basis.

I have been living Gluten Free (GF) for a while - maybe 15 years or so - that means that I don't eat anything with Wheat, Rye or Barley in it (added oats back into my diet and that seems to be ok). I recently visited a naturopath to see if there was anything I could do to relieve my sinus pain and seemingly chronic skin rashes. I had some blood tests and while it showed that I have the cholesterol of a 20 year old track star - thank you McDonald's for not making a Gluten Free hamburger - it also showed that I have some other food issues. Now, in addition to the GF living, I live egg, dairy, cane sugar, tomato, zucchini, bell pepper, almond, sesame, blueberry, pineapple and banana free - that wasn't quite the list I was hoping for. Anyway, Karina has an even longer list and manages some how to remain a true inspiration when it comes to cooking and life with a 'list'. I would say that no less than 5 days a week are we eating well from one of her recipes. She makes it seem easy and fun and oh so tasty. So, if you're looking to try something different or have someone in your life that has a 'list', try Karina's Kitchen she will no doubt nourish your body and soul - Thank you Karina!

I'm a sucker for a good crumble so I just had to make some this morning.
The recipe is here - I made mine with 1/4 cup agave syrup, 1/3 cup of Lara's certified GF rolled oats and a little bit of vanilla rice milk to make up for brown sugar (cane sugar)
The cranberries are tart so I think that I could have gotten away with a little bit more agave but it's still really yummy.

monday's post

I did this today and while it's not even close to the amazing things from here, here and here not to mention this - it was fun and it took my mind off my head ache for a while.

Leaves seem to be a good thing for practicing embroidery - I think that I'd like to try a dog or a cat or a dog shaped leaf.

why failure is good

Why is failure good? It sucks!

I'm sure that there's plenty good things to be learned by making mistakes and experiencing failure but winning and getting what you want has it's bonuses too. Like feeling that your not a giant failure for instance. I'm not saying that's how I feel but when something good does happen it makes me feel better than trying to put a positive spin on yet another less than great thing.

Anyway, that's life right - you can't win them all.

Exhibit A: Tea Cozy for the worlds skinniest tea pot. I have a little tea pot and this barley fits over the spout - so what is it good for? A funny hat to entertain your husband and possibly the dogs, it's hard to tell.

IMG_1109.JPG

It barley fits on my head and I don't think that my head is any larger than your average 6 year old's noggin with a chunky knit tuque. (that's Quebec for winter hat). Oh sure it will make a couple of really nice pot holders and the next tea cozy will benefit from this failed attempt...yata yata...but it's dark now and I've given myself a headache and I have to get through a whole week of work before I can get back to the sewing machine.

I hate getting out of my crafting groove, it puts me in a bad mood... can you tell.

In happier moments today I did complete this runner for Marita. It will hopefully cover the chest that she has the TV on to hide the the open shelves. Since Marita lives in Edmonton and I don't - I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I think it turned out kind of cool. There will be a TV cozy to go with when I can get a good handle on the shape of the TV.

Peace -

Fashion Thursday #5

This is my big yellow pal Chester, I"m sure you've seen him here before.
This morning I noticed a deep cut in between his toes - so I cleaned it and now he is sporting this lovely sock with blue tape. He's usually not into wearing anything, in fact he turns into a frozen statue when I try and put his blaze orange safety vest on - but the sock seems to be OK

YES IT'S OVER!

Unfortunately that's just about all I can say about A Red Shoe Event 2007 right now.

People came and spent money and everything went just like I had planned it - planned it since last May. It's over.

Here are a few snaps that I was able to take. They're not that great but you might get a feel for the event. When I feel like pondering anything Red Shoe again, I may write a more detailed post but my brain has just now stopped listing event details when I go to sleep and that seems like a good thing - all that comes to mind right now is - it's over.

My piece went to a good home for the bargain price of $350.

I heard that the bar tending wasn't great - this looks like people standing in line for a drink and not to pleased about it.

The SFCC Jazz band - they were really great, the best part of the evening if you ask me.

the 307th day of 2007 - or A Day Off

PB030004.JPG

It's Saturday and there is nothing that I HAVE to do today. The Red Shoe program files won't be looked by the printer until tomorrow, when I'm sure there will be a missing font or a piece of art that has spot colors in it or one of the other typical issues that only seem to arise when you send something to a printer. It's a graphic designers cross to bear and I carry it without complaining. But TODAY is not that day, today I'm staying home - making stew and thinking about something other than what I'll be doing tomorrow.

The plan is to find my craft table again

Dig into some bags of fabric that I bought a million years ago - it's so sad that they're still sitting in the bags from the sale.

IMG_0949.JPG

Uncover my sewing machine so I can get to creating projects for Marita, Tara and Laish - Thank you three for your requests, you are the creative fuel that I need sometimes.

I also plan to hang out with my peeps

Fashion Thursday #4

OK, I've missed a few but anyway...

Here I am looking very pensive about my sweater and pants and the pencil sharpener on the window sill.

PA304507

Here's another self portrait and a good view of my new chair.
PA304486

As usual, I'm wearing my red Danskos. I have a new pea green sweater that I am awfully fond of and my good ol' purple cords - It's cords weather again. Time to dig out those beauties you got at the GAP or Old Slavey - last year's models are probably waiting for you at the local thrift shop.

Happy Fashion Thursday and welcome to November!
