My Favorite Photo (of the week)

This was taken at my mom's 60th birthday party. I love how there are a lot of people in the photo but you can only see Emmett's face. It seems like a baby's perspective.

A little logo design

this video is fun to watch even if you're not a designer.

From http://blog.howdesign.com
"Designer Ty Mattson recently completed a logo design for Mottsy – an innovative, online printing company. The client was really interested in the creative process and asked him to record his computer screen during the development of the logo. This time-lapsed movie is the result"

Emmett J at 15 weeks

Intent on writing a blog post today, I have actually chosen to stay up when I could be sleeping. My body says sleep but my brain says post something today, right now or you'll wake up in 14 years and realize you forgot. I am way past tired. It's sort of scary how tired I am. So please excuse me if my normally horrible grammar is even worse.

In the past 2 weeks I have returned to work. On the whole I'd say that it hasn't been too bad. There's a lot of interest in Emmett and how he's doing. A lot of it similar to the interest there was in my big round belly. "How's he doin' ?" "Great!" I say. "Growing a lot" and speaking in full sentences and mowing the lawn and of course sleeping 10 hours at night! HA! The hardest part of being at work is pumping. The second day I was a work my milk went down dramatically. That freaked me out. I was sure that by the end of the week it would be gone completely. To make matters worse Emmett, who was adamant about not drinking from a bottle until the day before I went back to work, decided that not only was the bottle alright but while he's at it he might as well drink as much as possible. He drank twice as much as I could pump. I really thought my nursing days were numbered. But Kellymom helped me realize that bottles are fun to suck on and babies like to suck and so suck they will. They'll suck and suck until there's nothing left. We tried pacifiers and he isn't having it. He spits it out and makes Newman's "vile weed" face, that's when Jerry forces him to eat broccoli at Kenny Rogers Chicken. Anyway, since that first week my milk has returned to full capacity and things on the feeding front seemed to be leveling out once again.
That is until his first day of daycare. There was one mini hunger strike. A message to me, I think, about just how do I expect him to keep up with all these changes!? But, as I suspect is the truth with all boys, the desire to eat won in the end.

Of course with all my worrying about not having enough milk, I've been pumping and feeding as much as possible. The result being that I am producing enough for the Octomom. I have one boob that just never empties. It's always full and kind of uncomfortable. Never fear, I have come to my senses and scheduled an appointment with a lactation consultant. Hopefully she can help me formulate some sort of pumping feeding plan that won't starve Emmett but will leave me with a manageable supply.

To make all this breastfeeding stuff more complicated, Emmett has begun to teeth. A few times he's chomped down hard on me and OWWWEEE I think I jumped 2 feet in the air. According to the internet, I am supposed to explain to Emmett that nipples aren't for chewing. How exactly do you explain that to a 4 month old? I have a feeling there are a few more bites down the road for me.

There are so many new things about Emmett this month. He actually falls asleep on his own, sometimes playiny. It's really cute to watch his little arms, he'll be laying there grabbing at toys and trying really hard to stay awake and then gradually he'll have to close his eyes but he keeps his arms moving for a little while. He smiles at us and makes all kind of new sounds. He is totally talking to us. We aren't desperately pulling out the bag of tricks to get him to settle anymore. The house is decidedly less full of "white noise" and a lot less crying. I'm sure the mom's who read this will agree there's something about reaching that 3rd month. Right? It's like having a new baby. A baby that smiles and stares at you. A baby that reaches out and actually grabs something.

3 months

This evening I watched as Emmett swung his arm for momentum reached with his neck and rolled himself on to his side. He likes eating and being distracted between meals. Being distracted could be laying on his back or standing on me doing his ski jumper impersonation. He's a curious sort of baby, he likes to stretch his neck out to see things. He'll only be happy in a carrier if he's facing out. He still is entirely not pleased with any type of stroller. He'll tolerate it for a while, maybe 2 blocks. We're working on that.

On days when I'm working from home he has a 16 year old sitter named Litcell. She seems to know more about babies than I do. On the first day she was here Richard and I were trying to explain how to take care of him and she made more suggestions than we did. There's still so much to learn and who knows if we're doing any of it right. My gauge is if he makes it through the night and wakes up with a smile on his face things are going ok. I'm sure it just gets more complicated but we're fast learners.

um that camera is a little close

Also this month, Emmett met his aunt Holly and uncle Matt and his grandparents on his Daddy's side. He and I are also gearing up to fly to Seattle to celebrate my sister's 30 birthday. She's really getting old.
